P3 A- Genre
I have looked at the reviews by ‘IGN’ and ‘The Telegraph’
which each discuss the genre of ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ as an action-adventure
game. For instance, The Telegraph notes in their review of how it is an
interactive game which allows you to become fully involved with the character’s
lifestyle as if you are in their perspective. This is understood when stated in
the review “After stealing weaponry from a jewellery store heist, I find myself
under the attention of the local constabulary”. This is a first person
interaction within the game, meaning that the experiences mentioned in the
review display the conventions required for an action-adventure game. IGN
states experiencing similar aspects of the game, stated as such “I flew a plane
into another plane, fought the crew, hijacked the thing, and parachuted out and
watched it crash into the sea”. Therefore, each review shares the same opinion
that Grand Theft Auto V is an action adventure game.
P3 B- Target Audience
As each review by both ‘The Telegraph’ and ‘IGN’ state in
great detail how the game display’s clear conventions of an action-adventure
game, we can assume that they would associate this game with a similar target
audience. For instance, the target demographic will most likely be those who
share an interest in action-adventure games, which is generally those who are
male. Each of the topics which are found within the game display ‘masculine
traits’ such as violence, weaponry included, and strong language which are
usually associated within games that are chosen to play by men. The age
category as we know will be those who are over the age of 18, as Grand Theft
Auto holds the official age rating of such.
